What is VetPen Starter Kit?

VetPen is the world's first insulin pen designed specifically for use in cats and dogs with diabetes. Similar to human insulin pens, VetPen is an automatic insulin delivery pen that makes giving your pet insulin injections quicker, easier and more accurate. The VetPen Starter Kit comes with a VetPen, 28 count package of VetPen Needles (12mm x 29G), a Travel Pouch, a Needle Remover, a Dose Selector Adaptor, and an instruction insert. VetPen 8 delivers 0.5 IU-8IU in 1/2 unit increments, and VetPen 16 delivers 1 IU-16 IU in 1 unit increments. VetPen can only be used with VetPen Needles. When needed, VetPen Needles (12mm x 29G) are available in a 100 count refill package (sold separately). The VetPen can only be used with the Vetsulin Insulin 2.7 ml cartridges (sold separately). Vetsulin Insulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) treats diabetic dogs and cats by controlling the levels of glucose in the blood. Vetsulin Insulin requires refrigeration and must be kept at refrigerator temperatures at all times. VetPen requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

Suitable for:

Dogs and Cats

Benefits:

  • Ergonomically designed for easy handling, even for owners with visual or manual dexterity issues.
  • Multi-dose insulin cartridges require fewer steps to prepare doses.
  • Portable and easy to take on the go (refrigeration of cartridges is recommended).
  • Less intimidating process for clients who have fears and concerns about using the traditional syringe method.
  • User friendly; 97% of pet owners reported they had no difficulty learning or using VetPen.
  • Minimizes pet discomfort thanks to specially lubricated and triple-sharpened needles.
  • Starter Kit provides owners with a handy travel pouch containing detailed instructions, needles and needle remover.

How does VetPen Starter Kit work?

VetPen is an automated insulin delivery system that makes it easy to manage your dog or cat's diabetes mellitus and minimize hyperglycemia. The VetPen is available in 2 sizes, an 8 IU VetPen with dosing increments of 0.5 IU, and a 16 IU VetPen with dosing increments of 1 IU. The incremented dosing systems aids in providing accurate dosing, and the VetPen is designed with an easy-to-hold ergonomic grip, making the dosage process simple even for owners with visual or manual dexterity issues. The user-friendly design and incremented dosing system has resulted in 97% of pet owners reporting they had no difficulty learning or using VetPen.

Cautions:

VetPen should always be stored or carried with the needle removed and the pen cap on. Clean VetPen with a damp cloth. Vetsulin Insuiln must be refrigerated. When VetPen is loaded with a Vetsulin Insulin cartridge, store under refrigeration. Keep out of the reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Accidental injection may cause clinical hypoglycemia. In case of accidental injection, seek medical attention immediately. Exposure to the product may induce a local or systemic allergic reaction in sensitized individuals.

What is the most important thing I should know about VetPen Starter Kit?

VetPen must be used with specially designed 3 mL cartridges containing 2.7 mL of Vetsulin, a 40 IU/mL insulin. VetPen can only be used with VetPen Needles(12mm x 29G). To avoid damaging VetPen and dosing errors, cartridges containing other insulins should not be used with VetPen. The VetPen Starter Kit includes a package of 28 VetPen Needles. When needed, a 100 ct refill package is available. While Vetsulin Insulin is not a cure for diabetes, it helps alleviate diabetes symptoms in your pet. VetPen must be administered subcutaneously.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before using VetPen?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is hypersensitive to pork or pork products, has any other medical conditions, or has any liver or kidney disease. Let your veterinarian know if your pet is pregnant, lactating, or breeding.

How should VetPen Starter Kit be administered?

The detailed instructions for use provided with VetPen should be strictly followed. The injection should be administered subcutaneously, 2 to 5 cm (3/4 to 2 in) from the dorsal midline, varying from behind the scapulae to the mid-lumbar region and alternating sides. Do not reuse a needle. Dispose of all needles with the Needle Remover in an appropriate puncture-resistant disposal container. Vetsulin Insulin 2.7 ml cartridges must be refrigerated.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Vetsulin Insulin to my pet?

If you miss a dose, follow your veterinarian's instructions. Prevent missed doses by keeping enough Vetsulin Insulin 2.7 ml cartridges on hand.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Vetsulin Insulin

If you inject more than the prescribed amount, contact your veterinarian immediately.

What are the possible side effects of Vetsulin Insulin?

An allergic reaction, although rare, may occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives. Talk to your veterinarian about other possible side effects that can occur.

What other drugs will affect Vetsulin Insulin

Progestogen and glucocorticoid use should be avoided. Other medications can be used with Vetsulin Insulin; however, doses might need to be adjusted. Before giving your pet any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, talk to your veterinarian.

What special precautions are there for VetPen Starter Kit?

Vetsulin and Vetpen are for use in animals only. Dogs and cats known to have an allergy to pork or pork products should not be treated with Vetsulin. Vetsulin is contraindicated during periods of hypoglycemia. Animals with severe ketoacidosis, anorexia, lethargy, and/or vomiting should be stabilized with short-acting insulin and appropriate supportive therapy before use. As with all insulin products, careful patient monitoring for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia is essential. Overdosage can result in profound hypoglycemia and death. Use of a syringe other than a U-40 insulin syringe will result in incorrect dosing. Using a U-100 syringe with Vetsulin would result in an animal receiving 2½ times less insulin than required. Human insulins are formulated at a concentration of 100 IU/mL. If clients use a U-40 insulin syringe with a 100 IU insulin preparation, they would be injecting 2½ times the amount of insulin necessary, which could result in fatal hypoglycemia.

Storage:

While the VetPen itself requires no rerigeration, cartridges and insulin, whether loaded into the VetPen or not, should be protected from light and high temperatures. Keep cartridges refrigerated at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze insulin because this will denature the insulin. Store insulin vials upright to avoid crystallization around the stopper, but when VetPen is loaded it can be stored on its side. Use insulin contents within 42 days of first puncture.

VetPen Directions:

  • Prior to loading Vetsulin cartridges, shake the cartridge until a homogeneous, uniformly milky suspension is obtained. Do not use the product if visible clumps or white particles persist after shaking.
  • Pull off the VetPen cap and unscrew the VetPen body from the cartridge holder.
  • Check to ensure that the internal plunger is fully retracted. If it's not retracted, rewind the internal plunger until it is fully retracted.
  • Load the insulin cartridge into the holder metal cap in first, and screw the cartridge holder firmly onto the VetPen body.
  • Peel the protective film from a new VetPen Needle, and screw it straight onto the cartridge holder. Remove the outer protective needle cap from the VetPen Needle.
  • Replace the VetPen cap and shake until a homogeneous, uniformly milky suspension is obtained.
  • For proper dosing, remove the air from the cartridge (prime) by dialing one unit on the dose selector. Remove the pen cap and hold the VetPen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge gently with your fingers to push up air bubbles. Push and hold the release button. Repeat until the air bubble is gone and insulin drips out of the needle tip.
  • Turn the dial to the correct unit and inject into your pet 2-5 cm from the dorsal midline, varying from behind the shoulder to the mid-back region and alternating sides. Hold the needle in place for at least 5 seconds after the dial line returns to the arrow during injection to ensure proper and accurate dosage.
Tip:

Insulin injections are just one key part of a pet diabetes care plan. Suitable diet, regular meal times, regular exercise and monitoring progress are the keys to managing pet diabetes.
