Question:

My 8 month old dog that wasn't fully vaccinated was diagnosed with parvo on Wed afternoon and started recieving hospital treatment then. He was very lethargic, not eating and vomiting. After we left him at vet the diarrhea started. He has an iv and is recieving fluids and different medicines. Yesterday morning they said the vomiting was under control but he still had diarrhea. When they tried to move him to a different cage he started vomiting again. But there hasn't been anymore vomit this morning. Still hasn't eaten but they said he isn't as lethargic. This afternoon will be 72hours of hospital treatment. What are his chances of making it at this point? And should we continue to let vet treat him or would it be better to bring him home to treat him?

Answer:

Hey! I would suggest leaving your puppy at the vet to continue his treatment because that is his best chance of survival. Vomiting and diarrhea will cause him to become very dehydrated so keeping him on the IV fluids is vital. They are also able to give him IV anti-nausea medication and antibiotics. With hospitalization, his chance of survival is about 50-75%. If you were to take him home, it would be much lower. -Dr. Lindsay Butzer

Question:

is parvo airborn can i let my 10 week puppy with one parvo shot in my back yard? He is a rottweiler and getting heavy to pickup.

Answer:

Hey! If he has 1 shot with breeder before you got him and 1 shot with you, YES you can let him in the backyard. Parvovirus is everywhere in the environment, but if your puppy just got a shot he is good for 1 month. Then you have to boost again for 4 boosts a month apart is what I recommend. I hope this helped! Question:

What should i do to prevent my puppy to stop vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea

Answer:

Hey! I am so so sorry. Parvovirus is a deadly virus and your puppy may only survive being hospitalized at a veterinary hospital with critical care. The only thing over the counter to help with vomiting is Pepcid (famotidine) 1mg per pound dose. Immodium can be given 1/2 tablet twice a day to the puppy to to help with diarrhea. Pedialyte for fluids around the clock. Im really sorry, but you need to see a local veterinarian. Dr. Lindsay Butzer

Question:

I'm about to run out of fluids I've been administering at home to my pup who im almost positive has parvo. I don't have money to take her in for a vet to see her. Where can I purchase more fluids (1000ml bags) & 25g needles without a vet RX???

Answer:

Hey! Unfortunately LRS or lactated Ringers which is fluid you can administer subcutaneously to your sick puppy is a prescribed medication of electrolytes and fluids for hydration. Please explain your situation to a local veterinarian and you should be able to get the fluids, but you will probably need to bring the pet in for them to examine it. I hope this helps! Question:

Is there some kind of at home IV that I can use or anything that would be helpful

Answer:

Your veterinarian may be able to show you how to give subcutaneous fluids, but At home treatment is not recommended unless treatment at your vet is simply not an option at all. Question:

What can I give my puppy for nausea she got diagnosed with parvo and we are doing an outpatient parvo treatment but the didn’t give me any medication

Answer:

Here is a link to our article about treating parvo virus, with a section about at-home care: https://www.1800petmeds.com/education/parvovirus-treatment-dogs-30.html At home treatment is not recommended unless treatment at your vet is simply not an option at all. Your veterinarian will have injectable medication (like Cerenia) to treat the nausea if you are going in intermittently for fluids. Nothing over-the-counter works very well because it is oral and just gets thrown up or not absorbed very well by the gastrointestinal tract.

Question:

Hello. How long does parvovirus live inside the house? For example, blanket, clothes. And what are the chances for a 1 year old dog to catch parvovirus?

Answer:

It really depends on the heat and humidity inside your house but parvo is a very stable virus so potentially many months. Bleach is a good disinfectant to use that will kill it. A well-vaccinated dog that is over one year of age and has a normal immune system probably wouldn't get very sick from coming into contact with parvo.

Question:

Hello. My 11 months old got his vaccine at 8 weeks old and then at 12 weeks and then at 6 months. The vet doctor said that the third vaccine should be given at 6 months. But now I found out that it should be given at 16 weeks. Can you tell me please was it wrong to give the third vaccine this late? What should I do now? All these vaccines that he got won't work?

Answer:

The third vaccine should have been given 3-4 weeks after the second, but don't worry, the vaccines he has been given have stimulated his immune system a little, he just isn't considered fully vaccinated yet and technically needs 2 more vaccines spread appropriately out by 3-5 weeks.

Question:

Can flies transmit parvo? I have 11 months old puppy and I am anxious about him getting parvo. Cause it is summer now and I heard that flies can transmit parvo. How likely that my puppy will get it? Or 11 months is old enough and he is safe?

Answer:

No, flies cannot transmit parvo. It is a very stable virus that primarily lives in soil. If he has finished his entire puppy vaccine protocol (usually 2-4 total vaccines separated by 3-4 weeks) and is 11 months old, he has past the window where they usually acquire it, so he is probably safe now.

Question:

Think my dog might have Parvo he has had soft stool for the past week and can not control his bowl movements and does have a lot of gas I have been giving him Probotics and feeding him Boiled Chicken and rice to change from what he was eating before i thought it might have been the Ice Cream he had and maybe the milk did it but dont think its that any more he is 2 years old Yorkie

Answer:

Thankfully patvo is rare in dogs over a year of age, but there are many other possibilities. Determining the underlying cause of the diarrhea is ideal. Start by having your veterinarian analyze multiple different fecal samples looking for intestinal parasites. There are so many causes, I will attach a link to our article about diarrhea that goes over many of those causes and discusses various treatments, both over-the-counter and prescription: https://www.1800petmeds.com/education/diarrhea-dog-cat-30.html
